If you build it will they come?

In the social media realm I see a lot of people following the “if I build it, people will come” mindset. Personally, I think this is the wrong approach. Engagement is key in the social media realm and if you build something before you engage them then how are you attracting people to your social media efforts? Yes, you will get some people who are interested in what you are offering if you do some basic marketing to get the item out there. The real question is does this mentality inspire champions or do you have surface level engagement as a result?

I think what Maddie Grant and Lindy Dreyer have done with YAP is a perfect example of how to engage in social media. When I discovered YAP they had a fan page on facebook. It wasn’t really what they wanted to inspire group participation so they moved over to a group page as well. Eventually the group warranted having it’s own network.

Now the Young Association Professionals are housed on a CollectiveX network. They have a vibrant community that grows all the time, a group of dedicated creators who create content and critics that continue the conversation. All in all they have a great thing going and I’m interested in seeing where else they can take it.

Oh and few things that I think are vital components to YAP’s success – offering usable tools (such as their CAE study group) and being able to meet these people face to face (their Yappy hours).

  1. Thanks for the shout out Lynn!! We do feel very proud of our lively little community… and it does take a lot of hard work and love to maintain a social network. But the rewards are immense!

  2. You are more than welcome Maddie! You and Lindy deserve to be recognized for sure.

I’m really excited to see what you and Lindy have planned next with YAP. I will see you guys at the Tech conference if not sooner! 🙂
