What we can learn from the Microsoft Kin…


In case you haven’t heard…

Microsoft is pulling the plug on the Kin. You can add your words of condolence here.

So what does this teach us?


1. Us Gen Y’ers care about what our friends are doing, but not enough that we want to lose the perceived functionality of the phone.
Lesson for associations: Don’t forfeit functionality for the cool new tool

2. Mobile devices need to focus on many aspects of the mobile experience, not just the social networking ones.
Lesson for associations: Think about the entire experience, not just one facet

3. Be clear in your marketing. I know it’s supposed to be a phone, but the only features I ever saw showcased were about posting status updates. My social experience is much more than just that. And for the record, I think Gen Y’ers text more than they update their statuses. It was never made clear what “your loop” was.
Lesson for associations: Making sure your value proposition is meeting the needs of your members and that it is communicated effectively & directly

    I remarked to a colleague (we’re both tech freaks) that Microsoft dropped the ball on the Kin lineup.

    A few lessons I take from this:

    1) You can’t tell the market what they want. You have to ask.

    2) Don’t spend too much money on a project without testing to see how successful it’s likely to be. A small scale test would have saved a lot of money, and even more embarrassment for Microsoft.

    3) If you’re going to define a new category (like “social media phone”) offer something truly unique. The Kin interface has a different look and feel to it, but what could it do that you can’t achieve on, say, the Android platform?
